Tropical climate, scenic ocean views, and a rich history of cultural identity: welcome to the islands of Micronesia.
Micronesia is in Oceania, comprised of thousands of small islands—hence the name “Micronesia”—in the North Pacific Ocean. Included in Micronesia are Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. For the sake of exploring the history of the English language in Micronesia, my primary focus will be on the Federated States of Micronesia: Chuuk (Truk), Kosrae (Kosaie), Pohnpei (Ponape), and Yap. Within these states, language has gone through an incredible transformation because of the continuous shift in colonial powers. Though at various times governed by Spain, Japan, and Germany, the United States influence has—and continues—to contribute to the success of the islands. In fact, Rehg (2006) explains that “English is an official language and lingua franca of the nation” (p. 124). Because of the various mother tongues on the islands of Micronesia, English serves as a lingua franca—or a common language of people who speak two separate primary languages. Micronesia’s status as being included in Kachru's “Outer Circle” of English aligns with how much the language influences the country. In Micronesia, English continues to be taught in education and will soon be moving away from a lingua franca status. Each page focuses on the role English has played in the development of Micronesia and gives greater insight into Micronesian culture. Economy:
